Gugulethu Primary School is situated in the north-east of the Free State Province in the town of Frankfort, within the vibrant township of Namahadi at 1216 Mapohoshe Street. As one of the oldest and most established primary institutions in the area, the school serves learners from Grade R to Grade 7 in accordance with national departmental norms and standards.
Our school provides parallel medium instruction using IsiZulu and Sesotho in the lower Foundation Phase (Grade R – 3) to promote mother-tongue foundational literacy, transitioning to English as the primary Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT) in the higher InterSen Phase (Grade 4 – 7).
Operating as a "Bantu School" from 1963, tuition originally took place inside local church buildings so that learning continued without disturbance. It catered primarily to IsiZulu-speaking learners from Grade 1 to Grade 8 (SSA to Form 1).
The school was officially established in 1966. First named Thembalethu ("Our Hope"), it was later renamed Gugulethu Primary School ("Our Treasure") after discovering that another school had already registered the name Thembalethu.
The first set of permanent buildings—a block of 8 classrooms with 8 educators—was officially handed over. Rapid enrollment growth soon led to temporary shacks being erected to accommodate overflow.
A modern building complex was officially handed over by Assistant Director Mnr. Steyn. Today, the 1968 building houses the Foundation Phase (Grade 1–3), while the 1988 building houses Grade R and the InterSen Phase (Grade 4–7).
In accordance with updated Departmental Grading Norms & Standards, Grade 8 learners were transferred to local secondary schools, allowing Gugulethu to specialize as a primary institution (Grade R–7).
To reflect community demographics and foster inclusivity, the school introduced Sesotho alongside IsiZulu as a Home Language, restoring Gugulethu to its original standing as a dual-medium community hub.
Honouring the visionaries and principal leaders who have guided Gugulethu Primary School through generations of educational growth and excellence:
